Google Pixel 5a with 5G Review: 2023
The Pixel 5a with 5G was secretly introduced by Google. The unveiling comes only weeks after Google announced a complete revamp of the upcoming Pixel 6 on the inside and out. With the same camera stack and metal unibody design as last year’s Pixel 5, it’s practically identical.
The price reduction delivers flagship-level functionality to the middle, where it handily outperforms competitors. The Google Pixel 5a is currently one of the greatest Android phones available. It isn’t the most powerful phone, and the display isn’t particularly impressive. However, I do not believe that these criticisms detract from the phone’s strengths.
Let’s see Google Pixel 5a with 5G Review 2023
Design:
Google’s new Pixel 5a is a plain-looking, big plastic phone that prioritizes software over aesthetics. It has an IP67 water-resistance rating, which is the first for Pixel phones in the A-series. The 5a’s smooth, soft-touch texture collects fingerprint oils, which are difficult to wipe with a shirt or a microfiber towel alone.
The new Google Pixel 5a phone boasts a large 6.34-inch display and a fingerprint sensor on the back that’s just as good as the one on the Pixel 5. The top speaker is hidden in the earpiece, which is a slit above the display that is barely visible. The 5a has better sound than other phones in this price range, yet it lacks the bass and warmth you’d get from a pair of headphones.
Display:
The 6.43-inch full-HD OLED display on Google’s new Pixel 5a phone isn’t the most impressive we’ve seen, but it’s still quite excellent. The screen is neither bad nor good; it is average in the nicest possible way.
Although the phone’s maximum brightness is only achieved when Adaptive Brightness is activated, I had no issue viewing the display in direct sunshine. The phone’s maximum brightness in our tests was 501 nits, which is significantly lower than the Pixel 4a’s 681 nits and the iPhone SE’s 651 nits. Even something as simple as a YouTube video looks fantastic on this screen.
Connectivity:
For wireless audio, the Google Pixel 5a has dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 with aptX-HD and LDAC codecs. It supports all 4G networks in the United States, as well as AT&T and T-mid-band Mobile’s 5G networks. The speakers are adequate for watching Instagram Stories, but you’ll want to use the 3.5mm headphone socket to listen to music.
Cameras:
It sports a 16-megapixel main camera and an 8-megapixel selfie camera in the top left corner of the screen. The Pixel 5a and iPhone SE approach portrait photography in very different ways, and the results are surprisingly different.
The Pixel 5a focused directly on my face, whereas the iPhone SE zoomed out and produced a softer bokeh effect. Both phones adapted for the light in the space, resulting in photos that were well-lit and detailed.
Pixel-Perfect Photo:
The Pixel 5a features a 12.2MP primary sensor and a 16MP ultra-wide lens with an f/2.2 aperture on the back. The front-facing camera is only 8 megapixels, yet it shoots excellent photos in any light.
Test shots had remarkable clarity and natural depth of field in low light. The texture is deep, the color accuracy is perfect, and the noise-to-texture ratio is fantastic.
In low light, the Google Pixel 5a with 5G outperforms the Samsung Galaxy A52 5G and the Apple iPhone 12. In good light, both phones perform equally, while Google’s exposure constancy is arguably greater. The Galaxy S21 Ultra’s photographs had higher background detail in low light, but there was more noise.
Video:
The Pixel 5a phone from Google can record video in 4K at 60 frames per second and features a feature called Cinematic Panning that slows down panning in your video clip.
Google has been constantly improving its video capturing capabilities in recent years, and the 5a is one of the greatest Pixels to date at this chore. Colors are more true, the microphone is significantly better, and stability is on par with that of the iPhone SE.
Performance:
The Pixel 5a is a mid-range Android phone with a Snapdragon 765G processor and 6GB of RAM, according to Google. It won’t hold a candle to the A13 Bionic in the iPhone SE. But it’ll get the job done in most situations. Playing games was fine, albeit some of the more demanding games. Such as Asphalt 9 and Genshin Impact, caused the phone to overheat.
Google’s phone does the majority of what a phone should do without issue. I couldn’t get this phone to slow down while gaming or switching between apps on the fly during my tests. It’s a drop in the bucket compared to Apple’s iPhone SE, which is still the quickest phone.
Software:
The phone will receive platform updates for three years and a minimum of three security patches. If you’re coming from another manufacturer’s phone, the lack of personalization and capabilities may come as a surprise.
Battery life and Charging:
The 4,680 mAh battery in the Google Pixel 5a is one of the best we’ve seen on a Pixel phone. It lasted 9 hours and 45 minutes on a single charge, which is about normal for smartphones. Unlike Apple’s cheap iPhone, there is no wireless charging on board.
Pros:
- Water resistance of IP67.
- The display is large and vivid.
- OLED display that is long-lasting and crisp.
- Cameras that are among the best in their class.
- Spectacular cameras with all-day battery life.
Cons:
- Chipsets from the past.
- It doesn’t have a zoom lens.
- Speakers of mediocre quality.
- There is no mmWave connectivity.
- There is no wireless charging available.
Conclusion:
The Google Pixel 5a with 5G is the best mid-range phone you can purchase, thanks to its powerful performance, immersive OLED display, huge battery, and superb camera stack.
